Your Arm Pain May be a Neck Problem

Dr. Tim Esguerra, DC

Pain in our hand, wrist, or arm can be frustrating especially when you realize how often we use our arms and hands on a daily basis. Pain, numbness, or tingling may get in the way of you enjoying activities that you love. Getting rid of the pain may be easier than you think.

Hand, wrist, and arm pain often start with a neck problem. When a cervical disc irritates or presses on a nerve, it can result in arm pain. Just like a hose that brings water to your plants, your brain and spinal cord split into nerve roots that deliver and receive information to every part of your body. The nerves in our neck are specifically focused on providing strength and sensation to our head and arms. A bulged or degenerated disc in your neck can irritate or compress the nerve that supplies our hands, arms, and shoulders. We know from recent studies that people with neck disc herniation showed improvement in over 86% of those who received chiropractic care. Improving spinal mobility, decreasing inflammation, and improving posture may help prevent future episodes of neck and arm pain.

Pain in the arms as a result of a pinched nerve in your neck rarely requires surgery. Getting rid of the inflammation, decompressing the nerve, stabilizing the neck through therapeutic exercise, and giving the disc time to heal is essential to help our patients reduce their symptoms and return to their sports/activity.

Best,

Dr. Tim
